The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), established in 1983, is the largest Greek State R&D Centre. FORTH hosts seven major Research Institutes. The Institute of Computer Science (ICS) has established an internationally acknowledged excellence in conducting basic and applied research, developing applications and products, and providing services. FORTH-ICS, besides its pioneering contributions in the sector of Information and Telecommunications Technologies in Greece, cooperates, in the context of European and international collaborative R&D programs, with universities, research centres and other organisations at national and international level, thus contributing to the exchange of scientific ideas and the creation and transfer of new technologies. In the area of storage systems, FORTH-ICS has extensive experience and activities, within CARV (Computer Architecture and VLSI Systems). CARV has an 18-year experience in interconnection network architectures and communication protocols for high-performance compute and storage systems. CARV has been working on and with storage prototypes over the last 6 years. This work has resulted in a large scale, working prototype that is currently being used for research in the area. The full I/O stack in the system kernel has been developed in-house. In 2008 FORTH-ICS (and CARV) has filed for a patent in the area of storage subsystems. CARV has participated in numerous EC projects in this area (SIVSS, Unisix, SARC, HiPEAC, SCALUS, STREAM, IOLANES, CumuloNimbo, Encore, TEXT, TransForm, DeSyRe, FASTER). CARV has extensive expertise in runtime systems for multicore processors, operating systems, caching and communication protocol stacks for general purpose as well as specialised interconnects, network interfaces, architectures of commodity components, scalable systems, distributed block-level storage, and system reliability. The role of FORTH in NanoStreams will be:
• Provide expertise and work on issues related to the I/O path from memory to the device, including the OS kernel and the user-space components.
• Use its experience in coordinating EU project and successfully lead WP3.
• Contribute to overall design, integration, and evaluation.
• Participate in dissemination activities.
• Add the developed technologies in its IP portfolio and pursue further exploitation.
